The Power of Scleral Lenses in Pediatric Care

A recent case report by Dr. Catherine Liu from OHSU

Scleral lenses can be transformative, especially when visual development is on the line.

In a recent case report from OHSU, Dr. Liu shares the management of a 21-month-old patient with congenital sclerocornea, bilateral PKP, and limbal stem cell deficiency.

Initial fitting with corneal GP lenses was attempted to maximize visual potential while simplifying handling. However, due to poor stabilization and tolerance, an alternative approach was needed.

Outcome:

• Enhanced ocular surface hydration and protection
• Support of graft clarity and longevity
• Optimized visual input during a critical developmental window
• Improved functional vision, as noted by fixation behavior and family observations
